The Best Advice: Get Approval Before Taking the Course!

Applications are generally reviewed on a monthly basis during the academic year. Please allow up to six weeks from the time of submission for a decision.

Students seeking approval for Fall 2024 courses:  applications should be submitted on or before Friday, August 16th,  2024.

Before You Enroll, assure that:

  • The course is offered at a 4-year institution.
  • The host institution is located in the United States (If the institution resides outside of the United States, students must answer all "optional" questions on the transfer credit application).
  • The chemistry major at the host institution is accredited by the American Chemical Society. Click here to confirm the ACS accreditation status of the host institution.
  • The course must be a requirement of the ACS-accredited degree program offered by the host institution.
  • Requests involving CHEM 1560, 2070, 2080, 2090 or 2510 must include a lab component.
  • All course components must be taken in person. Hybrid remote or online courses will not be accepted under any circumstance.

    Applying for transfer credit:

  • If the course meets the above guidelines, download and complete the Department of Chemistry Credit Transfer Application.
  • Email the completed application and all corresponding syllabi for the course to: [email protected]. Return the application as an excel file - NO PDFs!!

  •  If the application is approved, students will receive written approval from the department via email. Students should then follow the steps outlined by their home college to complete the credit transfer process: A&S students, CALS students, EN students, HE students.

  • If the application is denied, the student will receive an email as to why the application was not approved.

  • A minimum grade of a ā€œCā€ is required to receive credit.

Special Circumstances:

  • We do not approve credit transfers for Cornell honors courses: CHEM 2150, 3590/3600, or 3890/3900. No exceptions.
  • This department only deals with chemistry courses. Chemistry majors seeking transfer credit for  distribution or pre-requisite requirements (e.g. MATH 1110) should contact the home department at Cornell for approval.
